I know the definition. Why do "explain" questions still cost me marks?
How do I set out a genetic cross so every mark is there?
I have hardly done any practicals. How do I answer questions about them?
What does a long describe-and-explain answer need that mine keeps missing?
Two hours for Paper 1. Where am I losing time?
Each part of the 4BI1 specification taught in Pearson's order, with the cell, leaf, heart and kidney diagrams drawn and labelled the way the papers ask for them.
A short check at the end of each section, so what did not stick shows up before the next section builds on it.
Real 4BI1 questions on one topic at a time, from the sittings in the bank. Multiple choice is marked the moment you answer; written answers come with the mark scheme to tick against.

About
This is the Edexcel International GCSE Biology course, written against specification 4BI1 for the 2027 and 2028 examinations.
It follows the specification in Pearson's order: the variety of living organisms; cells, biological molecules, nutrition, respiration and gas exchange; transport, excretion, and co-ordination and response; reproduction and inheritance; ecology and the environment; and the use of biological resources, from food production to genetic modification and cloning. Each section is taught, checked, then practised on questions from real 4BI1 papers.
You sit two papers. Paper 1 covers the core content. Paper 2 covers everything, including the statements the specification marks with a B. The question bank holds real Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions. Multiple choice is marked the moment you answer. Written answers come with the mark scheme, so you tick what you earned point by point.
4BI1 has no laboratory exam: the practicals are tested in writing, and the course teaches them that way. It does not replace time in a school laboratory, and it has no live classes.
Access runs to the date printed against your sitting.
Outcomes
Set out monohybrid crosses with a genetic diagram and predict the probability of each outcome
Explain how temperature and pH change enzyme activity through the shape of the active site
Explain how light, carbon dioxide and temperature limit the rate of photosynthesis
Describe the specification practicals: the method, the variables, the results and what they show
Answer describe, explain and evaluate questions the way the mark scheme rewards each
Work through Paper 1 in 2 hours and Paper 2 in 1 hour 15 minutes
No. Lessons are one step of six. At the end of each section comes a short check. Then come real 4BI1 questions on that topic, marked at once for multiple choice and against the mark scheme for written answers, a full paper on the real clock, and a revisit list built from what your child says still does not make sense. Watching starts the work. It does not finish it.
4BI1 has no laboratory exam. Practical work is tested in writing, inside Paper 1 and Paper 2, and experimental skills with the analysis of data and methods carry 19 to 21% of the marks. The specification lists the practicals your child must know, such as testing foods, enzyme activity and temperature, and sampling with quadrats. The course teaches each one the way the papers ask about it: the method, the variables, the results and what they show. The question bank holds real practical questions from 4BI1 papers. It does not replace doing the experiments at school.
Open your child's account with them. Every paper they sit carries a light. Green means everything correct. Yellow means mistakes, with the mark scheme there to show what was missing. Red is the one they set themselves: when an answer still does not make sense after checking it, they mark it, and that topic stays on their revisit list until they clear it. That list is the useful part. It names the topics still not clear, in the specification's own words.
Keep the tutor. A tutor has a few hours a week. This is open at every other hour: real 4BI1 questions on any topic, marked at once for multiple choice or against the mark scheme for written answers. The revisit list, the topics your child has said still do not make sense, is a good thing to bring to the next session.

TutorBiology · 20 years in education
Every lesson should make difficult concepts clear, build confidence and help students learn effectively, through simple explanations, practical and real-life examples, and focused exam preparation.
Aurundutee Ameen teaches Cambridge O Level Biology (5090) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1), after twenty years in education: teaching, training, counselling and curriculum development. That work has been with English-medium institutions including Excel Academy, Southbreeze and Australian International School Dhaka, and Aurundutee founded and directs Ascend Scholars Institute. The focus is on the concepts students commonly misunderstand: finding them and making them simple through clear explanation, practical and real-life examples, and exam-focused guidance, so students get past the confusion, build confidence and learn with purpose.
Movement of substances into and out of cells
Diffusion, osmosis and active transport for Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1: how molecules cross the cell membrane and how to explain it the way the exam asks.
Reproduction: hormones and the menstrual cycle
How FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone control the menstrual cycle and ovulation, and how an imbalance in these hormones can disrupt reproduction.
Natural selection and evolution
How variation, competition and selection let better-adapted organisms survive and reproduce, so useful characteristics become more common over generations.

FAQ
This is Edexcel International GCSE Biology, specification 4BI1. Check the code on the statement of entry. In Bangladesh, Edexcel International GCSE is often called Edexcel O Level; it is the same qualification. Cambridge O Level Biology (5090) and Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) are different qualifications with different papers.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 of 4BI1, from sittings between 2019 and 2024. The newest is October/November 2024, and there are no 2022 or 2025 papers in the bank yet. Under The papers you will sit, each paper shows how many of its questions are in the bank. Every one was set on the current 4BI1 specification.
Until the date printed against each sitting under Choose your plan, which falls after the exam for that sitting. You see the date before you pay.
Multiple choice is marked the moment you answer. For written answers, you write your answer, then see the real mark scheme for that question and tick the marks you earned, point by point, the way an examiner would.
Yes. Create a free account, with no card, and you get three free attempts in Biology (4BI1). A whole question paper counts as one attempt.
No. The course is recorded, with no live classes and no messaging a teacher. The checks and the mark schemes show where the marks went; they do not answer your child's questions. If your child needs someone to explain, keep the tutor for that, and take the revisit list to them.
