Food tests: four unknowns

Test four unknown foods with Benedict's, iodine, biuret and ethanol, say which nutrients each contains, and rank the reducing sugar.

What you will do

  1. 01Put a little of each food into a clean test tube for each test.
  2. 02Add Benedict's solution and heat in a boiling water bath for a few minutes.
  3. 03Add iodine solution to another sample.
  4. 04Add biuret solution to another.
  5. 05Shake another with ethanol, then pour it into water. Keep the ethanol away from any flame.
  6. 06Record every colour, then say which nutrients each food contains.
